Bhopal: Taking an important initiative towards the preservation of Indian traditional arts and connecting them to the general public, a ten-day workshop on traditional Madhubani painting is underway from 2 August at Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal. This workshop will run till 10 August 2025 in the “Traditional Technology Park” located in the museum premises.
The workshop is being conducted under the direction of Mrs. Alakha Devi, a well-known Madhubani painter of Bihar, who has been active in this field for the last 35 years and has represented this art in the country and abroad. Along with her, six traditional artists have been specially invited from Bihar, who are adept in various styles of Madhubani—Kachni, Bharni, Godna, etc.
During the workshop, the participants are being provided practical training in technical methods of painting including the use of fabric colors and natural colors. The creation of paintings based on traditional symbols, nature, tribal life and mythology is also being taught, which will prove to be extremely beneficial for art students, researchers and traditional craft lovers.
Along with this, a two-day macrame art workshop was also organized in the museum, which was conducted by Bhopal’s famous macrame artist and exporter Pooja Sharma. In this workshop, the participants learned to make decorative items like wall decorations, plant holders etc. with various techniques of knots. Ms. Pooja presented the traditional craft from a modern perspective and highlighted its sustainable use and creative possibilities.
