AIIMS Bhopal performs rare and complex bentall surgery

  • Swollen aorta and heart valve successfully replaced, saving patient’s life

Bhopal: The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at AIIMS Bhopal has successfully performed a rare and complex Bentall surgery on a 44-year-old man from Sehore district. The patient had been experiencing chest pain and palpitations for six months. Investigations revealed a large aortic aneurysm (8–10 cm in diameter) along with severe leakage in the aortic valve. The life-threatening condition required urgent replacement of both the aorta and the aortic valve with artificial grafts.

The surgery was particularly challenging due to the patient’s rare B-negative blood group, which made arranging blood support difficult. After multiple failed attempts at treatment in other hospitals, the patient approached AIIMS Bhopal. A team of experts at the CTVS department evaluated his condition and decided to proceed with the high-risk surgery.

The surgery was led by Dr. Yogesh K Niwaria and his team, including Dr. M Kishan, Dr. Surendra Singh Yadav, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Dr. Vikram Watti, and Dr. Aditya Sirohi. Remarkably, the patient did not require a blood transfusion during the procedure. Post-surgery, he showed steady recovery in the ICU.

Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh praised the team, calling the success a reflection of AIIMS Bhopal’s clinical excellence and commitment to advanced healthcare.
