67 Indians trapped in cybercrime centers in Cambodia rescued

Phnom Penh/New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) The Indian Embassy in Cambodia has been actively engaged in rescuing and repatriation of Indian nationals trapped into working for cybercrime syndicates, with 67 Indians rescued from Poipet on September 22 with the help of Cambodian police.

In a press statement, the Indian Embassy in Cambodia said that Cambodia Police rescued the Indians following specific leads provided by the Embassy. The embassy is now facilitating their repatriation in batches.

Fifteen of the Indian nationals left for India on September 30, and 24 left for India on October 1. The remaining 28 will leave for India in the coming days, the embassy said.

Since January 2022 till date, the Indian Embassy has facilitated repatriation of over 1,000 Indian nationals, with nearly 770 repatriated in the first nine months of 2024.

This was possible with the cooperation extended by the Cambodian authorities to the Embassy of India, it said.

“The Indian Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to help our nationals trapped in cyber crimes. Meanwhile, Indian nationals are advised to exercise extreme caution in taking up job opportunities in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries through suspicious agents and social media advertisements.”

The embassy asked Indian nationals stuck in such crime syndicates and wishing to return to India to reach out to the Indian Embassy.

It said in a post on X:
