3.80 lakh first-time voter applications submitted in Bihar during SIR

New Delhi, Aug 25 (UNI) The Election Commission today said that approximately 3.80 lakh applications have been submitted by first-time voters aged 18 and above during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, marking a significant step towards increased youth participation in the democratic process.

The process of filing claims and objections against the draft electoral roll, released on August 1, is currently underway. With seven days remaining, citizens have the opportunity to request corrections, additions or deletions in the draft list, the Election Commission said.

So far, 1,40,931 claims and objections have been received from the general public. Of these, 14,374 cases have already been resolved by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant EROs, with the remaining set to be addressed following the end of the claims and objections period.

For the revision of the list in the state, six national and six state-level political parties in the state have deployed around 1.61 lakh Booth-Level Agents to monitor the process. However, in a surprising development, only ten claims and objections have been submitted by these political parties so far.

Meanwhile, Opposition parties have raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the revision process, staging protests both in Parliament and on the streets. Despite the criticism, the Election Commission has reiterated its commitment to a transparent and rule-based process, emphasising that the goal is to ensure no eligible voter is left out of the electoral rolls.
