27 civilians killed, 43 injured due to attack by Sudanese paramilitary group RSF

Khartoum, July 24 (UNI) At least 27 civilians were killed and 43 others injured in a recent attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a village in western Sudan, a volunteer group and an eyewitness said today.

“Yesterday (Wednesday), the RSF launched an attack on the village of Brema Rashid, located north of the city of Al-Nuhud in West Kordofan State, leaving 27 civilians dead and 43 others seriously injured,” the Sudanese Doctors Network, a volunteer group, said in a statement.

“An armed RSF unit violently assaulted unarmed civilians inside their homes, targeting women, children, and the elderly,” it said, calling the attack a “heinous crime” and “a crime against humanity.”

It called on the international community to impose measures to halt violations against civilians in RSF-controlled areas and establish humanitarian corridors to assist those forcibly displaced from their homes.

An eyewitness from the area, speaking to Xinhua on condition of anonymity, said the attack, taking 27 lives, took place on Wednesday afternoon, when an RSF armed convoy entered the village center in combat vehicles and opened fire indiscriminately on residential homes and a small local market.

The RSF has not yet issued any comment regarding the incident. Sudan remains gripped by a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023.

The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, both internally and across borders, deepening the country’s humanitarian crisis.

Recently, clashes between the SAF and the RSF have intensified in the Kordofan region, which includes North, West, and South Kordofan states.

The RSF controls most towns in West Kordofan and is imposing a siege on El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan.
