13 injured in Seoul after car drives into market – Reports

Seoul, Jan 1 (UNI) At least 13 people have been injured in Seoul after a car drove into a traditional market, the Yonhap news agency has reported, citing police.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when a 73-year-old man drove his sedan into a crowd of people visiting the Mokdong Kkaebi Market in southwestern Seoul, the police said, adding that witnesses reported that the vehicle moved about 330 feet into the market before coming to a stop.

“I accelerated to avoid a bus in front of me and then hit the brakes near a market stall. However, I don’t clearly remember what happened next,” the driver, whose alcohol and drug tests returned negative, reportedly said.

However, he does not claim that the incident was caused by the car’s sudden acceleration, the police said.

Seoul’s law enforcement also said that it will investigate the matter using footage from the market’s surveillance cameras.
