- Police suspect celebratory firing; investigation underway
Bhopal: A 10-year-old girl, Riya Rajak, tragically died after being shot while playing near a tableau pandal in the Kolar Road area on Thursday afternoon. An X-ray report later confirmed the presence of a bullet, which had entered from between her neck and shoulder and lodged in her waist. She was rushed to JK Hospital but died two hours later during treatment.
Riya, a fourth-grade student, was the only daughter of Sunil Rajak, a water supplier. Her grieving family lives in a rented home in Rajharsh Colony. Eyewitnesses said Riya suddenly collapsed while sitting with other children, and was found bleeding heavily.
Police have registered a murder case against unknown persons and recreated the crime scene with help from the Forensic Science Lab team. Postmortem results are awaited.
Riya’s uncle, Raj Rajak, said preparations for a feast were underway when she collapsed. “We suspect celebratory firing may have led to the incident. The bullet likely ricocheted and hit her,” he said. “We want justice for our innocent niece.”
