Willis Plaza’s hat-trick earned East Bengal biggest 5-0 win

Ahead of Sunday’s derby against Mohun Bagan, East Bengal trounced Tollygunge Agragami 5-0 at home in Calcutta Football League, thanks to brilliant hat-trick from Trinidadian Willis Plaza. East Bengal will face in their last match against Mohun Bagan on Sunday in Siliguri, moved atop the table with 22 points from eight games, same as their arch rivals, on better goal average.

Thirty-year-old Willis Plaza, who saved East Bengal from the brink of defeat in previous play against Mohammedan Sporting by scoring at fag end in 2-2 drawn match, was adjudged man of the match for his three goals on a row. He scored first in the 26th minute and then added two more goals in second half in space of 12 minutes from five minutes after water break.

Then Maharastra boy Nikhil Poojari booted home in 82nd and Mizo boy Laldanmalavia Raltepue buttressed the tally to 5 a minute later from his back headed goal. This was East Bengal’s biggest win with five goals in season opener and also a warning to football rival Mohun Bagan, who seek to win the title for first time in seven years. The Reds and Golds have been winning the Calcutta Football League for record seven times in a row.
