WB gangrape: SC takes suo motu cognisance

The Supreme Court today took suo motu cognisance of the gangrape of a tribal girl in West Bengal’s Birbhum district allegedly on the orders of the village panchayat.

The court directed the District judge of the area to inquire into the incident and submit a detailed report of the ground realities within a week. The court also issued notices to the Mamata Banerjee government. The panchayat had imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the victim for her relationship with a person from another community. When  she expressed inabiity to pay, the village panchayat ordered 13 people to rape her.

According to victim’s statement, villagers, who were of the age of her father, were among those who sexually assaulted her. The apex court described the incident as disturbing and heinous.  The next hearing will be on January 31.
According to media reports, the public prosecutor was missing from a local court when the 12 accused were produced.

They were sent to judicial custody and the state government acted only after the large scale protest by people.
