Visitor’s happiness and satisfaction is Museum’s prime objective: Vardhan

Bhopal : Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya organised another chapter of its popular series, Curatorial Talk today, where Museum Associate of Manav Sangrahalaya, Mr. Ashok Vardhan (Museum Associate, IGRMS) spoke on “Collection, Stewardship, Interpretation and Audience Engagement – (An Experience of the Best Museum Practices at AIC, Chicago, USA)”.

The lecture was chaired by Prof. Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri (Director, IGRMS). Mr. Vardhan commenced his lecture with describing the role of museums in the context of society, he said “Museums are the complex institutions of integration of cultures; tangible and intangible traditions exhibit the man and nature relationship and promote education and research activities”.

He further said “In elaborating approach, the Museums stand for the holistic presentation of various subjects like socio-cultural economic and technological aspects of the society”. Explaining the global standards of museums he said “The old practice of showcasing the objects in stereotypic manner is no more encouraged and promoted with the emergence of new museum movement”.

Speaking on embracing the new technology, Mr. Vardhan said “The face of the museum has been changed in India and around the world with the idea of using the technology for preservation and exhibition purpose for the future generations”. In this situation, the Government of India has decided to strengthen the museums in India by promoting the museum professionals for international standards of training.

The Vivekananda Memorial Program for Museum Education (VMPME) was such a collaborative activity between Ministry of Culture and Govt of India and Art Institute Chicago to train the museum professionals of India at various levels.

My lecture is mainly focused on the theme “Collection Stewardship, Interpretation and Audience Engagement,” which deals the role of museum curator in handling the objects from collection to display like management, collection, transportation, conservation, exhibition mounting, display, labeling, lighting, educational activities, ticketing and marketing. Earlier, Mr. Rakesh Bhatt (Assistant Keeper) gave brief profile of the keynote speaker.
