It will be the first of its kind irrigation structure in the state, putting a high challenge before modern Civil Engineering technology with very high risk factor. This inter basin tunnel structure is designed to carry 153 cubic metre of water per second to 12 km long underground passage. Having a diameter of 10m, this tunnel would be a part of main canal of Bargi diversion project in Katni district.
It would carry water from Narmada basin to Ganga basin, irrigating 1.9 lakh hectare lands in Katni, Rewa and Satna districts. It may be mentioned here that Bargi diversion canal is a 196km long proposed main canal aimed to create a total irrigation potential of 2.45 lakh hectare after completion. Up till now work up to 104 km has been completed. The proposed 12 km long tunnel would be from km 104 to 116.
The construction agency involved in making of tunnel is importing specially designed tunnel boring machine (TBM) for this purpose. Engineering wing of Narmada Valley Development Authority informed that the construction agency "Patel - SEW" (JV) Hyderabad is all set to get the TBM for this purpose. The giant machine would have only one life and after completing the task it would more or less convert into scrap, the sources said. The machine would be having special devices for boring over all 10m diameter hole in progression following a concrete lining and grouting of surface together.
It is to note here that procuring technologically advanced Civil Construction machines could be possible only after the NVDA took decision to give 15% amount in advance to contractors for the purchasing new machines. This facilitates contractors to buy high performance machines.
