Bhopal, July 2:
A leopard Trega today died in state capital's Van Vihar National Park due to old age. The leopard was over 17-year-old and had grown old and weak, Park Deputy Director AK Khare said. Despite providing immediate treatment by the veterinarians, the leopard could not be saved, he said.
He said Trega was brought here from Sidhi National Park when he was only two-and-a-half-years old in 1994 and has spent 15 years in the Park.
Khare said that population of aged wild animals is more in Van Vihar as compared to other zoos. Besides, India's aged lioness 'Rihana', one of the country's most aged leopards, is here, he informed.
Their average life is 13 to 14 years and there are four tigers, seven lions and six leopards in Van Vihar, which are above their average age.
Reportedly, Van Vihar is the only rescue centre of central India where large number of old, helpless and strayed wild animals are kept in their natural habitats.
According to Van Vihar authorities intense medical assistance was being provided to these animals due their old age and worsening health.
