Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka has defended his World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title after knockking out Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez in the third round of a bout.
It was not all plain sailing, however, as Nishioka was decked in the first round by a Gonzalez right at the Arena Monterrey in the north of Mexico.
But the 32-year-old Japanese champion came firing back, knocking down the Mexican in the third round with a monster left and leaving the referee no option but to stop the fight.
Nishioka won the WBC super bantamweight title in January with a dramatic 12th round stoppage of Mexican Genaro Garcia, and Saturday's win improves his record to 34 wins, including 21 KOs, against four defeats and three draws.
Former champion Gonzalez saw his record reduced to 40 wins, including 34 KOs, against seven defeats.
