Eagle's Eye: My beloved

Category »  Editorial Posted On Friday, May 08, 2009
When one is in a state of meditation reciting his mantra to reach that stage of inner Bindu, the Mantra becomes redundant and that experience that the Bindu was only an illusion remains. You are in the state of eternal being and there is nothing to strive for -RK Palshikar
The word beloved is described in the oxford dictionary as "dearer love". Normally we use the word beloved ascribing beauty to woman and also for good qualities possessed by her. Thus I feel we are looking at it from superficial point of view. As we go deeper into it, its dimension becomes broader and it reaches the highest point. It is this point that we are trying to discuss.
It appears that the word beloved is a conjunction of the words "Being" and "Loved". To understand this aspect we have to rise from our physical senses to divinity. It may take any form of male or female or guru and further transcendental form as an Ishtadevata, and guiding angel. We carve out idols of Devatas (Male and Female) with beautiful faces, from different materials, adorn them with jewelry and worship them in temples and private homes. When we use this word in our normal parlance we overlook its divine significance and its ambit of universal consciousness.
Shree J. Krishnamurthy has said on this subject "I have always in this life and perhaps in past life desired one thing, to escape beyond sorrow, beyond limitations, to discover my Guru, my beloved who exists in everybody, who exists in every common stone, every blade of grass to be trodden upon. It has been my desire, my longing to become united with them, so that I should no longer feel that I am separate, no longer be a different entity with a separate self. When I was able to destroy that self utterly, I was able to unite my self with my beloved. Hence, because, I have found my beloved my truth, I want to give it to you". Further he has to say regarding his experience in going through this "I know what they are up to ............... I know when the limit of pain is reached they will return. They know how much the body can stand...................they are very careful with the body....................... They have burnt me so that there can be more emptiness. They want to see how much of Him can come".
In other words that Jivatma is at home only when it is with the Paramatma. Separated from Paramatma the Jivatma is not at ease and aches to get back to where it belongs. He prays to the Paramatma to grant him an opportunity of serving the lord. Service to God is the only wealth that is sought by a true devotee.
I know of a case of an infant who lost his parents at the age of three. His guiding angel took charge of him and helped him through thick and thin, to evolve him. She not only restricted to this part of his life but even gave resemblance of her face to him. Now the desire of the devotee is to act with servitude to the guiding angel with love instilled as benediction from her. We know of instances when saints have taken upon themselves the suffering of their devotees. Shree Ramakrishna Paramahansa was in the last stage of his life and was suffering from cancer being the cumulative effect of the sufferings of his devotees. He was in great pain, Swami Vivekananda seeing his unbearable condition requested him that he should pray to his Devata Kali Mata to mitigate the sufferings. Shree Ramkrishna was postponing the request but at his insistence he went to Kali Mata and the reply he got was, "Do you still feel that you are living in this body of senses".
Similar Instance took place in the life of Shree Gondhavlekar Maharaj. One day the Maharaj told his devotee to invite about ten people for lunch. This news spread in camp of mischief mongerers who wanted to be-little the Maharaj so they on their own behalf invited about 250 to 300 people residing in Gondhavle on behalf of the Maharaj. On the appointed day the Maharaj stood for the Kirtan. At about 12O'Clock noon the mischief mongers sent the children to the maharaj to express their hunger. The Maharaj directed them to Rama's idol to express their hunger. At the same moment a man came and announced that he had brought food for 300 people to whom he wished to feed. The mischief mongers were dumbfounded and touched his feet asking for forgiveness. This clearly brings out the fact that the Devta is always ready to keep the honor of his devotees. We also know of cases of bridegroom sending their bride (their beloved to beauty parlor for 3 hours, spending thousands of rupees and at the same time curtailing their sacred rituals, which create sanctity of marriage. I was told in Pune that everyday cases of divorce are increasing.
Urdu poetry at the time of Sufi saints is full of adoration of God. However, in later times it took two different paths. One path towards divine prays, "Ashiqi, Haquqi" and the other pray to his lover "(Mashook) ashiqi magazi".
All this discussion and illustration brings out the true meaning of the word, "my beloved". When one is in a state of meditation reciting his mantra to reach that stage of inner Bindu, the Mantra becomes redundant and that experience that the Bindu was only an illusion remains. You are in the state of eternal being and there is nothing to strive for, the experiencer and experience become one.
I would like to conclude with the line from Gazal of Galib wherein he expresses his anguish "Faijan me mohabbat aam sahi irfane mohabbat aam nahi" the English rendering would be only that there are few selected persons who can go to this spiritual field but there are more who would like to be in the field of materialism.
