Srinagar, July 25:
To commemorate victory over enemy in 1999, a two-day ''Operation Vijay'' began at Kargil in Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir today.
Every year, Operation Vijay was being celebrated to remember the heroes who laid down their lives, evicting the Pakistani intruders, who had occupied almost all heights in Kargil and Drass sector in 1999.
The intruders had occupied the heights when troops on this side had withdrawn during winter as per the agreed arrangement with the troops on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC).
It took about four months for troops to neutralise or push back the intruders from the heights.
Now all the heights, including Tiger hill and Tololing are being guarded by the troops round the year despite temperature dipping to minus 40 to minus 50 degree during the winter.
Many events are being organised to befittingly remember the heroes of the war 11 years ago who evicted the enemy from the snowy peaks of Tiger Hill, Tololing and Batalik in Kargil, a Defence Ministry spokesman said here this afternoon.
Popularly called Operation Vijay, the war, which exhibited total synergy between the Army and the Air Force, was an example of grit and determination by the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the service of their motherland.
Drawn from all corners of the country, these soldiers galvanised a nation into patriotic frenzy depicting true 'Unity in Diversity'.
The celebrations began today with a briefing on the war at Umbala View Point, which provides a breath taking view of the majestic Tiger Hill and other battle areas.
This was followed by a friendly polo match between 'Ladakh Locals' and Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre' teams. The evening was rounded off with a cultural programme performed both by the forces as well as the locals. Senior Army and Air force officials and civil dignitaries graced the occasion.
Ceremonial functions will take place tomorrow which will include wreath laying, Sainik Sammelan, Bara Khana, exhibitions, band display and candle light vigil.
