`Khajuraho' makes it to the top

Khajuraho, known for its architecture and bold artistic statement, was voted as one of the seven wonders of India as part of NDTV's The 7 Wonders of India campaign, in association with the Ministry of Tourism. A first-of-its-kind initiative, the campaign brought millions of Indians together to vote for their favourite wonder and acknowledge the natural and man-made marvels of the country.
The Khajuraho temples, built over a span of a hundred years from 950 AD to 1050 AD, is the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their everyday life sculptures. The other wonders of India, are: Sun Temple, Meenakshi Temple, Red Fort, Jaisalmer Fort, Nalanda University & Dholavira Site. Apart from honouring the top seven architectural beauties of India, NDTV also awarded the 'Peaceful Wonder of India' and 'Spiritual Wonder of India' to Golden Temple and Tawang Monastery respectively. The monument of love Taj Mahal was honoured as 'The Wonder of Wonders'.
The announcement was made at a gala ceremony on Monday at New Delhi where actor Abhishek Bachchan along with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Dr Prannoy Roy announced Khajuraho as one of the seven wonders. The event was marked by a dance performance by actress Aishwarya Rai along with Shiamak Davar's troupe and a fashion show by ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee where he exhibited contemporary outfits using textiles and weaves from various Indian states.
Actor Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, flutist Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Industrialist Rajan Nanda were some of the prominent faces present at the event.
The 7 Wonders of India was a nationwide campaign held across the country with states clubbed under sixteen clusters. After the campaign's commencement in September 2008, seven top wonders in each state cluster were declared. A top wonder was then chosen as a nominee from each of these states for the final seven wonders of India. Twenty top wonders were in contention for the final honours.
The interactive and innovative selection process for The 7 Wonders of India had a series of distinguished jury members, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar, Chairman and MD of HRH Group of Hotels; Raja Jigmed Wangchuk Namgyal, King of Ladakh; Shama Pawar, Founder of The Kishkinda Trust and an artist who restored Hampi; Abha Narain Lamba, Conservation Architect; Travel Experts, Hugh & Collen Gantzer; OP Jain, President of Sanskriti Pratishthan and Former Convenor of INTACH; Artist Anjolie Ela Menon and Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. The campaign also received valuable support from India's two leading corporates- State Bank of India and Tata Indicom.
