Editorial Posted On Wednesday, March 17, 2010 | The procurement of wheat in Madhya Pradesh on support price has commenced from March 15 by the State Government. The rabi crop arrival in the grain markets has started. The Government procurement was long awaited by the farmers. The State Civil Supplies Corporation plans to procure 21.44 lakh metric tonnes of wheat while the State Marketing Federation would go for 9.58 lakh metric tonnes. After completion of State government agencies' procurement, the Food Corporation of India would purchase 4 lakh metric tonnes wheat. Both the State and the Central governments are going to procure 35.92 lakh metric tonnes of wheat from the farmers. In all the 50 districts of the State, 1200 centres have been set up where the farmers would be paid Rs 1,100 per quintal support price announced by the Union government with another Rs 100 as bonus by the State government. Nodal agencies of the State government are purchasing wheat in the mandis. Later the Food Corporation would purchase wheat from the farmers who would take their produce to its warehouses. Targets of purchase quantity and fund have been fixed. A strange phenomenon was witnessed last time. Farmers from neighbouring states of MP come to sell their wheat in State markets in lure of Rs 100 bonus offered by the state government on support price resulting in ending procurement from the farmers of the State. Now, the government should ensure that outside farmers do not capture the State's markets posing as domicile farmers.
