New Delhi, Mar 16:
A total of 201 HIV positive prisoners are currently lodged in country's largest prison, the Tihar jail, Government today said.
"Between the year 2008 to 2010, a total of 2,540 inmates have been tested and out of them 201 have been found to be HIV positive," Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
At present, 55 inmates infected from HIV/AIDS are lodged in Delhi jails out of which 14 inmates are on Anti- Retroviral Therapy. All inmates who enter the jail are tested for HIV in Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) as per NACO protocol.
Inmates detected negative for HIV are educated and counselled about the causes of spread of HIV.
He said that inmates who are found HIV positive are provided treatment and care.
