Bhopal, Mar 16:
Farmers' Welfare and Agriculture Development Minister Dr Ramkrishna Kusmaria has said that Madhya Pradesh is one of the few states where the priceless heritage of biodiversity is present in copious quantity. We should take a pledge unitedly to conserve this heritage. Dr Kusmaria was speaking at the two-day workshop on the subject 'use of biotechnology for a green India' at Career College here today.
Dr Kusmaria said that Madhya Pradesh is being seen as a biodiversity hub nationally and internationally. He said that biotechnology must be profusely used to keep Madhya Pradesh green. Indiscriminate use of Western technology has become an eyesore for our environment. Continuous use of chemical fertilisers has degraded soil's fertility, he added.
The minister said that India has been an agrarian society since time immemorial. We should develop a cow-based agricultural system. Talking of Bt Brinjal, the Agriculture Minister said that if it is given permission, more than 350 indigenous varieties of brinjal would be affected.
The workshop was also addressed by Dr Shankar Patidar, Ms Madhubal Sugandhi, Bhaskar Majumdar and agricultural scientist Dr Ajay. Apart from Madhya Pradesh, delegates from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh are also taking part in the workshop.
