Nation Posted On Sunday, February 28, 2010 | United News of India Chandigarh, Feb 28: Punjab is all set to establish a world class State Data Centre with the Department of Information Technology having assigned the turn key project of civil construction of first phase of 25,000 sq feet covered area at Mohali to Punjab State Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC). The state IT minister Adaish Pratap Singh Kairon has ordered the appointment of system integrator by inviting offers from national and international professional concerns for merging the already operational State Wide Area Network and Mini Data Centre facility at Chandigarh, besides providing world class technology, equipment and other other resources at the new State Data Centre. Speaking during his visit to the existing State Wide Area Network and Mini Data Centre facility here, Mr Kairon said here today that the Department of Information Technology has already commissioned Panjab Wide Area Network (PAWAN) infrastructure for mini data centre, which includes Core Router, Core Switch, Firewall, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Content Filtering System , Mail Solution, Anti virus and internet. Collaborating with HCL, Database administrators, Network Administrators, Security experts, Hardware engineers, Help Desk professionals have also been appointed and started working, he added. According to Principal Secretary Information Technology Sarvesh Kaushal, who accompanied the Minister, the State Wide Area Network has got very good and reliable connectivity to all Districts, Sub-Divisions and Blocks. A kind of mini data centre has been created to cater all immediate requirements of different departments of Punjab till the state-of-art State Data Centre is established at Mohali by the end of this year itself. The Departments can connect to PAWAN and can have direct access to this mini data centre. The department will shortly set up 42U Rack to strengthen the existing facility, and additional racks can also be installed in the same premises, if required without any delay. Mr Kaushal informed that PAWAN is already being utilised by the Deputy Commissioner offices, sub-divisional offices, BDPO offices, besides offices of the police and of other departments and even SUWIDHA centres. As per the assessment report prepared by the Department of IT in consultation with state government departments, a total of about 4000 horizontal offices under 39 departments (including Excise & Taxation) across the State are to be connected to this network (PAWAN) for electronic exchange of data and services.
