Patiala, Feb 27:
The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has vowed to wipe out the menace of doping among Indian lifters, come what may.
Talking to UNI on phone, the secretary-general of IWF, Sahdev Yadav said "I will not rest until the scourge of doping amongst Indian lifters is buried very deep." Doping among our lifters, of late, has brought a bad name to IWF and the country and it is my duty to act with a heavy hand to ensure that Indian weightlifting is no more plagued by doping scandals, Mr Yadav said in no uncertain terms.
"I am receiving the fullest cooperation in this context from the sports ministry at the Centre as well as the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA)," Mr Yadav underlined.
Refering to reports in a section of press that seventy lifters did not participate in the senior national weightlifting championship at Udaipur recently for fear of dope test, he said "I am verifying from the states to which these seventy lifters belong the reasons for their absence from the Championship, their absence could be for sundry reasons".
The IWF is now conducting stringent dope test on lifters.
Recently, dope test on sixtysix lifters was conducted and the results are awaited, according to Mr Yadav.
"We have conducted dope test on the lifters who came first, second and third and some random tests during the recently-concluded national weightlifting championship for seniors at Udaipur and the results are awaited," he said.
The IWF will now be conducting dope test on lifters who are in the training camp at Pune as also on Youth and Junior lifters who are in the national camp at Bangalore, he added.
