News Flash Posted On Monday, February 08, 2010 | United News of India Chandigarh, Feb 8: Heavy snowfall cut off the tribal districts of Himachal Pradesh from the rest of the country while the plains of Punjab were lashed by rain much to the relief of the farmers. The tribal areas of Lahaul and Spiti and parts of Kinnaur and the Bharmour area of Chamba district were cut off from the rest of Himachal Pradesh due to heavy snowfall last night and this morning. The snowfall disrupted normal life in these areas and even effected water supply as water froze in the pipes. The snowfall also blocked NH-21 just beyond the tourist resort of Narkanda as a result road traffic to Rampur from Shimla had to be diverted via Basantpur. The road to Rohru was also under one feet of snow at Khara Pathar. Even as the snowfall continued in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, the Snow Avalanched Study Establishment (SASE) at Manali has again sounded a warning for avalanches in these areas. The SASE warning has asked the people of the tribal areas not to venture out into areas of heavy snowfall and those which are prone to avalanches. The residents of these areas have also been asked to keep removing the snow from their house roof tops periodically to avoid roof collapses. While snow and rains lashed Himachal Pradesh, the plains of Punjab also received light to moderate rain which is considered good for the winter crop, particularly wheat. The conditions also remained overcast in Haryana where there were traces of rain at certain places. Reports reaching here said that the rain was fairly widespread in Punjab with Amritsar receiving 4.2 mm rain till noon today. Ludhiana recorded 6.2 mm rain while Patiala reported 1.8 mm rain till noon. There were reports of rain from Jalandhar, Pathankot, Ferozepur and other areas of the state. The minimum temperatures in Punjab however remained four to eight degrees above normal at almost all places. This was mainly due to cloudy weather conditions over the last few days. The minimum temperature at Amritsar hovered around 13.8 degree celsius, eight degrees above normal while at Ludhiana it was 14.2 degree celsius, seven degrees above normal. At Patiala the minimum temperature hovered around 13.5 degree celsius, four degrees above normal. In Haryana too the minimum temperature remained six to eight degrees above normal last night. The minimum at Ambala was 14.1 degree celsius, six degrees above normal while at Karnal it was 16.2 degree celsius, eight degrees above normal. The minimum temperature at Hisar hovered around 16.9 degree celsius, eight degrees above normal.
