New Delhi, Jan 11:
State-run telecom services provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today said it has formed a strategic alliance with National Fertilizers Ltd (NFL) to use the network base of the fertiliser firm for offering services in rural areas.
''With our new strategic alliance with the National Fertilizers Ltd, we reinforce and further strengthen our commitment to bridge the rural-urban digital divide and meeting the information needs of the rural consumer,'' BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal said.
The telecom giant has launched a pilot basis for selling its mobile products in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where NFL enjoys a substantial market share of its products.
The company will ''start selling paper and electronic recharge vouchers followed by SIMs, and GSM data cards through the distribution network of NFL dealers,'' it added.
The tie-up will also launch services like free SMS or voicemail up to five times daily on mandi prices, soil testing, farming techniques, dairy, weather forecasts and rural health.
Moreover, these will be available in the local language of the region, which would be easily understandable by the regional masses.
To make this programme a success, the company will conduct training for NFL dealers and retailers at the six locations-- Raipur, Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.
NFL Chairman and Managing Director V K Sharma said the tie-up would strengthen the company's efforts in providing updated agro-information to farmers.
He informed that NFL is already undertaking a number of educational and information based programmes for farmers using its strong marketing network.
