Nation Posted On Tuesday, December 29, 2009 | United News of India Srinagar, Dec 29: People in Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum dipped to minus 20 degrees Celsius this morning while the Western Disturbances (WD) from Arabian sea through Afghanistan and Pakistan effected an increase in the day and night temperatures in Srinagar. Dozens of ponds and nullahs in Leh district of Ladakh region were frozen after the minimum dipped to minus 20 degrees. People shivered and used all sorts of gadgets to warm themselves. The situation elsewhere in the region was no better as the minimum temperature was recorded between minus 16 to minus 25 degrees in upper reaches, including the areas near the Line of Control(LoC), where hundreds of security forces remained deployed despite all odds to foil any infiltration attempt from across the border. However, weather in Srinagar has improved after the arrival of the WD. The minimum was minus 2.3 degrees, against minus 3 degrees yesterday while the maximum was also above normal though the sky was cloudy during the day. Pahalgam, the base camp of Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir, was coldest with the minimum recorded at minus 4.6 degrees followed by minus 3.6 degrees at Qazigund, minus 3.2 degrees at Kokernag and minus 2.1 degrees at Kupwara.
