Madhya Pradesh Posted On Saturday, December 19, 2009 | Agencies Patthalgaon, Dec 19: Global warming seems to be having its impact even on the flock of migratory birds which have stopped ariving in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district during the winter months. Not a single migratory bird had arrived in the district replete with small and big reservoirs and a river this winter after their numbers steadily declined during the past two years. Chief Environmentalist of Jashpur division Nishikant Agnihotri told that a perceptible change in the climate had made it apparent for the migratory birds not to fly into Jashpur. ''In the past it was natrural for the migratory birds to arrive at the Neemgaon reservoir, Ghoghar river and other smaller reservoirs with Siberian birds dominating the flock of foreign guests'', he said. He said that the tribals in the region protected these migratory birds from getting poached which arrived from regions such as Japan, Russia and Tibet. Mr Agnihotri said that the village panchayats in Jashpur had even made a provision of penalising those who killed the migratory birds. The region used to be full of tourists to watch the migratory birds but there is no such activity seen his winter season. Divisional Forest Officer Hemant Pandey said that birds such as Black Turn, Common Red and Common Teal were common sight at the rservoirs. ''Due to lack of sufficient water in the Neemgaon reservoir, the arrival of migratory birds had been affected this season,'' added Water Resources Department officer H B Rai.
