Agencies Karnataka, Nov 29: The Kaiga nuclear radiation exposure is a matter of serious concern but there is no breach of security by an outsider," the Nuclear Power Corporation of India chief has said adding that an insider was behind the act. Four workers of the Kaiga atomic power plant in Karnataka were rushed to hospital with tritium poisoning after they consumed contaminated water from a cooler which was said to be shut. The workers who were hospitalised have now been discharged. Atomic Energy Commission chairman, Anil Kakodkar has described the incident as a serious lapse and said it appears to be an act of mischief. He said, "It is a mischief-maker who is responsible for this. It is a criminal act and a punishable offense under Atomic Energy Act of India. There is no danger to either to the exposed workers or to the environment or to people who come in contact with these workers. It is a serious operating procedural lapse." Tritium is the radioactive form of Hydrogen. If inhaled or consumed via food or water, tritium can lead to cell damage. It also increases chances of cancer.
