Sports Posted On Thursday, November 26, 2009 | Agencies Mumbai, Nov 26: Top seeds Sagar Chopda and Neha Pandit fashioned impressive victories to clinch the men's and women's titles, respectively, in the 1st V-Care Maharashtra Senior State Selection Badminton Tournament, organized by the Maharashtra Badminton Association, at the Matunga Gymkhana here today. Chopda of Mumbai Suburban overcame third seed Eshan Naqvi of Thane 21-15, 21-16 in a men's championship round that lasted 35 minutes, while Pune lass Pandit beat unseeded Tanvi Lad of Greater Mumbai 21-13, 21-18 in a 30-minute women's final. Chopda, just back from a stint in chilly Russia, adapted to humid home conditions quickly. He ignored Naqvi's surprise 6-4 lead in the opening game by surging to a 16-9 advantage with winners all the way, which reflected supreme confidence. Chopda maintained his grip as he raced to a 6-1 lead in the second game, nipping any move by Naqvi to dominate. As Naqvi was forced into errors Chopda stayed ahead and enjoyed the advantage until Naqvi hit wide after a long rally at match point. Neha Pandit unleashed a slew of forehand crosscourt drops that won her most the points against the talented Tanvi Lad. After surrendering the opening game even with an early lead, brave heart Lad kept her hopes alive by surging to a 13-9 advantage in the second game, as Pandit was surprisingly prone to errors while hitting wide. But the experienced Pandit put behind the blemishes and quickly found her rhythm back to close in with timely winners. As she drew level at 14-14, Lad was under pressure. Pandit sensed her young opponent's dilemma and snatched a 20-18 lead before Lad hit wide at match point. Prasad Shetty and Aditya Pandya of Mumbai Suburban won the men's doubles title, while Jui Agaskar (Mumbai Suburban) and Sanyogita Ghorpade (Pune) bagged the women's doubles crown.
