Editorial Posted On Monday, November 16, 2009 | The suspense over who would be the next national president of Bharatiya Janata Party has been lingering on for a long time. The party had fought 2008 Lok Sabha elections as a battle for power, not as an election. Even though the party won a number of seats to become the main opposition party in Parliament, yet they are tormented by the defeat complex due to losing the power at the Centre. The BJP Prime Minister in waiting, LK Advani could not make it to the PM seat and he also opted to step down from the party leadership. The party suffered drubbing during the stewardship of current president Rajnath Singh whose tenure is about to end. Two of the major posts of the BJP - leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and party's national president- are going to be vacant. Now, there is conflict over who would occupy these two posts. The name of Sushma Swaraj is making round for the post of leader of the Opposition. At the same time, there are a number of names being proposed for the post of BJP chief. Among these names is the name of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. The name of Murli Manohar Joshi has also been projected. Joshi has been the party president in the past. At that time it was felt that he could not play an impressive role to lead the party and LK Advani, who has also been a president, took the reins of the party in his hands. The party has been in and out of power in the Northern states. However, in the Indian heartland Uttar Pradesh it has debilitated a lot. At the same time, the Congress party is gaining ground there. Uttar Pradesh, which had become a coalition ruled state, has been made a single party ruled again by the Bahujan Samaj Party. Rajnath Singh who hails from Uttar Pradesh is not being considered a potential leader because of the BSP's rise in UP. For the post of national president of the party, consent of the party patriarch Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat is essential. He had also indicated that the party needs a young leadership but now it seems that the party could not find any potential young leader.
