Ganga action plan |

Editorial Posted On Tuesday, March 03, 2009 | Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, during his rule, had laid down an action plan for cleaning of the river Ganges which was in itself a revolutionary step involving the masses in the good deed. This plan was vey practical and the drains joining the river were to be divided into three categories; first drain which carry the rain water, second drain which carry sewer and dirty water and pollute the river water and lastly the drain which carry the bye-products of factories. The drains carrying filthy water and the bye-products of factories were to be checked and the filth prevented from entering river Ganga or they were to be passed through treatment plants before joining the Ganges river. In Kanpur the leather factories added a lot of pollutants in the Ganges and it happened that in Brauni, Bihar fire occurred in the river Ganges which was a matter of discussion among the environmentalists. The same plan was put forth for river Yamuna which has become a carrier for pollutants. It becomes a matter of disgrace to mention that after spending crores of rupees these plans have not been successful which have been mentioned by the committee recommended for this purpose. Even now drains carrying filthy water are joining the Ganges without any treatment; also the corpses of human beings and animals are regularly thrown in the Ganges. Similar is the condition of Yamuna river in which the pollutants from Haryana, Delhi and UP are regularly dropped in because of which it remains polluted. The administration has accepted that the action on the plan has been delayed and committee has been asked to be very strict with the officials and punish the guilty. The committee pointed out that Rs 35 crore had not been spent on the cleaning plan but instead houses had been built. For this very reason the plan to clean the rivers Ganga and Yamuna was unsuccessful.
