Rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pundits |
| Category »
Editorial Posted On Friday, September 18, 2009 | For Kashmir Pundits to remain as refugees in tents and camps in other parts of their own country is a great political tragedy for the Indian government. A secular India has Hindus as majority; still the hard-core Muslims have forced the Kashmiri pundits to leave their land. The hard-core elements, in the name of religion, see India and Hindus as their enemies and they accept Islamic Pakistan as their own country. Whereas the reality is that the upper north part of Kashmir, Ladakh totally follows Buddhism and the southern part, Jammu, has followers of Hinduism. The middle part of these two, which is called as Valley, is only populated by a majority of Muslims. The hard-core Muslims are hell-bent, with help from Pakistan, to convert the whole of Jammu and Kashmir into a Muslim land and drive away the Hindus. Kashmir has remained a perpetual problem for India. Hence it was not sure as to when the Kashmiri Pundits would return to their land. However, the UPA Government led by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has decided to rehabilitate the Kashmiri Pundits on their land, for which implementation too has begun. The Prime Minister has allocated a sum of Rs 1618 crore to the J and K government for the rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pundits. For proper implementation of the plan, a monitoring committee too has also been formed. The Kashmiri Pundits who had to leave their houses in J& K in wake of violence, and want to settle again there, a sum of Rs 7.50 lakh would be given Whereas those who lived in rented houses would be housed in the same, the rent for which would be paid by the Government. For Pundits who want to start agriculture, the government has decided to provide them with Rs 1.50 lakh each. There is also a provision to provide jobs to 6,000 Pundits. Of these 3000 jobs would be provided by the State and for the rest 3,000 jobs, the Central government would pay the salaries. The government would provide monetary aid for children of the Kashmiri Pundits to pursue education.
