Violence marked the second day in Muzaffarnagar with 13 deaths today even as Army personel opened fire when they were attacked by people in Kutwa-Kutvi village under Shahpur police station when they went to evacuate people.
Total death toll in the communal violence-hit Muzaffarnagar rose to 26 after 13 more deaths in five police station areas of Sisauli, Shahpur, Ugana, Kalapar and Bharakala. Additional Director General of Police (Law and order) Arun Kumar, who is camping in Muzaffarnagar, told mediapersons tonight that death toll was 26 since yesterday. 13 people died today while same numbers of casualty was yesterday.
He said the bodies recovered today were from six villages of Babri, Kharar, Lakh, Kotwa-Kotvi, Harauli and Mohammadpur. Earlier in Lucknow, UP Home Secretary Kamal Saxena said that Army has evacuated people from both the communities who are minority in the villages and they had to open fire when some people attacked them in Kutwa-Kutvi village. However, there was no casualty in the firing.
He said 56 people have been injured in the violence since yesterday including two policemen while 52 preventive arrests have been made by the authorities so far.
Inspector General of Police (Crime,STF) Ashish Gupta said in a press conference in Lucknow that every police station in Muzaffarnagar has been given two companies of Central forces and they are doing extensive patrolling.
FIR is being filed against the guilty people including some politicians and if required, National Security Act(NSA) would be registered against them,’ he said while adding that the security forces have been asked to open fire against the anti-social elements, if required. Home Secretary Mr Saxena, however, could not give the reason why the district authorities permitted the maha-panchayat yesterday after which the violence started.
