UN women to launch Women Empowerment Programme in Sehore, Jhabua

Bhopal, Aug 9:
Madhya Pradesh will be getting support from United Nations for empowerment of elected women representatives. Two districts – Sehore and Jhabua have been selected by UN Women – United National Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women. The Project Cooperation Agreement for the initiative was signed at Mantralaya today in presence of the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
On behalf of Government of Madhya Pradesh Commissioner Panchayats Vishwa Mohan Upadhyay and on behalf of UN Women Regional Project Director Sushma Kapur signed the agreement.
The women empowerment programme is being implemented in five other states – Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Orissa and Rajasthan.
The State Government will receive hundred percent grant of about Rs. 1.50 crore according to the Agreement. The programme will be upto December 31, 2012. Capacity building of elected women representatives in Panchayats, their socio-economic empowerment will be the main components. They would be informed about their rights and entitlements and made well-versed in execution of concept of social and economic equality.
It is worth mentioning that Madhya Pradesh is the first in the country to have given 50 percent reservation to women in Panchayats and civic bodies. Besides, 33 percent seats have been reserved for women in government jobs, 10 percent in police service.
