Tata Power, country’s largest integrated power company, has launched two initiatives namely ‘Hausala’ & ‘The Girl Power Project’, which is an initiative towards supporting adolescent girls in the age group of 15-18 years to attain formal school education and all-round growth.
According to a company statement, the initiative has garnered much success as it has reached out to more than 2000 adolescent girls and more than 300 youth. Under the initiative, learning centres by the name of “Avishkar centres” have been set up, which will be community managed, wherein girls in order to enhance their personalities, receive a range of training and counselling inputs and have also been re-enrolled into the schooling system.
Initially, the programme had to battle through high gender discrimination in Uttar Pradesh, Tata Power took this challenge to focus its activities towards creating the right framework for the education of these girls, a company statement said.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Ashok Sethi, COO & Executive Director, said, “Tata Power has always been focused towards the empowerment as well as security of the girl child in its areas of operations.
Through this initiative, we are not only educating adolescent girls but are also targeting on their holistic development, that will help them raise their voices without any hesitation. We would continue to support the cause through various initiatives that would work towards making their futures bright.”
With these workshops, the community’s behavior has notably changed towards the adolescent girls and they not only ensure their security while attending the centres but have also constructed toilets and provided drinking water facilities in the centres.
Close to 139 number of cases have already come into light, where the girls have raised their voices against practices like child marriage.
