Srinagar, About a dozen persons, including shopkeepers, were injured when security forces burst teargas shells and fired pellets to disperse demonstrators immediately after Friday prayers were over in historic Jamia Masjid, where chairman of separatist organisation addressed the congregation.
Hundreds of security forces and state police personnel had been deployed outside the Jamia Masjid and nearby areas who were conducting random searches of vehicles and frisking of pedestrians since Friday morning.
However, immediately after the Friday prayers were over and Mirwaiz left for home,people shouted slogans and tried to march towards the main chowk. But security forces deployed in the area prevented the processionists to march ahead resulting in clashes.
Security forces resorted to lathicharge and burst teargas shells in the Jamia Market and people continued shouting slogans from the worship place.Security forces later fired pellets, they said, adding about a dozen persons, including shopkeepers were injured in the clashes.
Clashes were going on when the reports last came in, official sources said, adding that reports of stone pelting were also reported from other downtown areas.
