Breaking her silence over VVIP Chopper deal, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her close aide Ahmad Patel today rejected the bribery charges, saying that BJP was indulging in character assassination. Mrs Gandhi dared the Modi Government to complete the probe into the deal and bring out the truth.

“I am not afraid of anybody taking my name.I say all the allegations are completely baseless, have no truth. We have nothing to hide,’’ she said talking to reporters in the Parliament premises.

“They are in the Government for the last two years. Let them complete the probe into the matter, and the truth will come out,’’ she said Mr Patel in separate interaction with media said, “They (BJP) are trying to divert attention from the real issues.

All charges against me and Mrs Gandhi are baseless, based on the internet search only, you go read (an) interview published in today’s (The) Hindu,” Mr Patel said, apparently referring to the interview of accused middleman in chopper deal James Christian Michel, who expressed his willingness to depose before the Indian investigating agencies.

Besides Ahmad Patel, several Congressmen came out in support of Ms Gandhi as Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy while raising the issue in the House said that the Congress President had been named in an Italian court proceedings into the allegations of kickbacks in the Agusta Westland deal.

Congress Spokesperson Tom Wadakkom, senior leaders Mr Veerappa Moily, Mr Oscar Fernandes, Digvijay Singh and Mr Pramod Tiwari all strongly denied the BJP charges and said it was under the UPA Government that the company was blacklisted .

They said it was the Modi Government that had cancelled the process of blacklisting of the company. BSP leader Mayawati demanded a Supreme Court-sponsored inquiry into the matter to bring the truth out.
