Sitharaman seeks reports on tuition fee cap from her department

After widespread criticism of Defence Ministry’s decision to cap the tuition fee, Defence Minister Nirmala Sithraman today called a meeting of the senior officials and sought details from the departments concerned on the issue, a top official said here.

The Secretary, department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare Ms Sanjeeanee Kutty was also present in the meeting and she has appraised the Minister about the issue. Earlier today, speaking to media Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had said that the government was seized with this matter and the issue would be resolved at earliest.

A few days ago, Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee Admiral Sunil Lanba had written to the Government to resolve the matter.

Sitharaman on Tuesday had said that this decision has been taken in accordance with the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission but since the issue was related to the feelings so it would be examined.

The Ministry is bearing the expense of around 3000 children of martyr as of now. The Government has put a cap on the education expenses of martyr’s children on September 13 through a notification issued by the department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare.
