India’s Under-19 star Shubman Gill’s magnificent maiden IPL fifty, combined with a brilliant partnership of 83 off 36 balls with captain Dinesh Karthik helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets in their Indian Premier League clash at Eden Gardens here tonight.
Chasing 178 to win, Chris Lynn (12) gave KKR a solid start against CSK after he hit
two sixes in the very first over.Lynn was however dismissed in the first over itself by Lungi Ngidi. Sunil Narine (32) continued KKR’s charge as he hit two sixes and four boundaries before getting dismissed in the seventh over.
Robin Uthappa (6) yet again failed to get going and was back to the pavilion off KM
Asif’s ball. It was after Narine’s and Rinku Singh’s (16 runs) dismissal when Shubman joined the party, putting up a 83-run partnership with Dinesh Karthik .
Both Shubman (57 not out) and Karthik (45 not out) led the run-chase and kept the
run-rate going. Shubman Gill brings up his first IPL fifty. Such a beautifully timed innings by the U19 star. Promoted to number 4, he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Hopefully first of many 50’s to come. The 83-run stand between Karthik and Gill is now the highest partnership for KKR this season for any wicket surpassing the 76 run stand between Karthik and Russell vs CSK in Chennai.
However, Shubhman survives a caught and bowled chance off Dwayne Bravo and he
capitalises on it by launching the bowler over wide long off for a boundary. He is eyeing a fifty and along with Dinesh Karthik, he holds the key if KKR are to chase this total down.Harbhajan Singh (1/20) was the only economical bowler for CSK. Ngidi and Ravindra Jadeja shared a wicket apiece for Chennai.
