Lucknow, Presenting a separate political ideology of a Bollywood couple, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Shatrughan Sinha’s wife Poonam on Tuesday joined the Samajwadi Party in Lucknow.The actor-turned-politician had joined the Indian National Congress recently after differences with the BJP.
Poonam came alone in Lucknow at the SP state headquarters and joined the party in presence of Kannauj MP Dimple Yadav, wife of party president Akhilesh Yadav.
Authoritative sources said she is all set to contest the Lok Sabha election from Lucknow Lok Sabha seat against BJP’s high profile candidate and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
SP sources said Poonam is likely to file her nomination papers on the last day on Thursday, in the presence of Akhilesh Yadav and her husband Shatrughan ‘Shotgun’ Singh.
Shatrughan, who himself is contesting as a Congress candidate against another BJP leader and Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in Patna Saheb Lok Sabha seat, is slated to campaign for his wife though, he would concentrate on his constituency most of the time.
While elections in Lucknow seat would be held on May 6, polling for Patna Saheb seat is slated on May 19, the last phase.
Poonam, 69, an actress and fashion model, worked in Hindi cinema under the screen name Komal in her early career. In 1968, she was crowned Miss Young India. She worked in bit roles in Hindi movies and also produced two films. Her latest film was Jodhaa Akbar.
She starred with ‘Shotgun’ in the movie Sabak released in 1973 and the two got married seven years later. After marriage, Poonam left acting to look after her home.
After a long gap of 30 years, she starred in the film Jodhaa Akbar in 2008 playing the role of Mallika Hamida Banu Begum, mother of Emperor Akbar, portrayed by Hrithik Roshan and directed by noted director Ashutosh Gowariker.
Poonam is the mother of three children and her only daughter, Sonakshi Sinha, is a reputed Bollywood actress in her own right.
