Two militants were killed and as many security force personnel injured in an encounter which ensued during Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Sunday morning, official sources said.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between demonstrators and security forces in the areas adjacent to sealed area while authorities suspended internet and rail service.
They said on a tip off about the presence of militants, security forces launched a CASO at village Badigam Imam Sahib in Shopian early this morning.
All exit points were sealed, they said, adding that when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, the militants hiding there opened fire.
Security forces also retaliated, ensuing an encounter. Additional security forces have been rushed to further tighten the cordon around the village.
In the initial firing, a soldier and a SOG personnel were injured, who were later shifted to base hospital here.
Two militants were reportedly killed in the encounter and two to three more militants were trapped in the area.
Security forces and police personnel have been deployed outside the cordoned off area to prevent any law and order problem.
