New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today suffered a major setback when the Supreme Court dismissed her petition for quashing the proceedings pending against her for not filing income tax returns between 1991-94. A bench comprising justices K S Radhakrishnan and A K Sikri directed that the trial against Jayalalithaa and her close associate Sasikala Natarajan should continue. The court also directed that the trial must be concluded within four months. Both the petitioners had challenged the validity of the criminal proceedings initiated by the income tax department for evading the income tax.
