After a nearly two-year wait, the historic Lokpal Bill to install Lok Ayuktas to deal with corruption was passed unanimously by Elders in the Rajya Sabha after a day-long debate facilitated by a walkout by Samajwadi Party MPs.
Unlike the previous occasion when the Bill came up for discussion, there was general unanimity to see through the much-awaited Bill, ensuring its smooth passage in the fag end of the Winter session of Parliament.
Assuring the members that the Bill was in response to the surge of opinion in society, Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal said while laws by itself did not end corruption, they could deter it.
Interestingly, with the passing of the Bill, the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers have now been brought under its ambit, a move that had seen some reservations from AIADMK members.
