Revenue intelligence officers must develop new skill to face new challenges: FM

Agencies, New Delhi

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Arun Jaitley asked Revenue Intelligence Officers to develop new skills to face new challenges arising due to changes rules, technology and business practices.

Addressing the Diamond Jubilee Foundation Day of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday evening, Finance Minster said that there were different challenges in the past as we were living in the era of regulated economy.

But at the same time Finance Minster told them to use their discretionary powers very carefully and fairly as they have wide ranging powers. “The scenario has changed and we have come to non-regulated economy which has seen less rules and regulations.

Many changes have been brought in the laws for the growth of the economy which require different skills for the revenue officials, especially to Revenue Intelligence officers,” he said. He added, “Agencies have not only the task of catching the tax evaders, or the frauds, but they have to keep it in mind that the charges against those people must sustain in the court.

He further said that more the taxes, more the evaders. But this government has brought down the taxes and it brings down the number of tax evasions. Still DRI has to keep their eyes open to track them as they may adopt different ways especially in the era where money moves very quickly.

While honouring late Tarun Kumar Dutta and late Shambhu Nath Dasgupta, who laid their life on duty, Mr Jaitley applauded the role of DRI and its officials for their contributions in the economic security of the country.

On the occasion, Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said that DRI is the best agency as far as strike rate in detecting illicit trade, catching tax evaders and seizure of smuggled items are concerned.
