SRH will face CSK in final
Kolkata, The Afghan sensation Rashid Khan’s all-round show helped Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 13 runs to enter the VIVO IPL 2018 final where they will take on Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have stopped Kolkata Knight Riders at 161/9 to record 13-run win in the penultimate match played at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.
Rashid blasted 34 off 10 balls, took 3/19, picked two catches and effected a run-out as he single-handedly helped Sunrisers Hyderabad end their four-match losing streak.Rashid has been the one-man army for SRH today, taking two catches, a run-out, 3/19 and the unbeaten cameo of 34 off 10 balls that helped Kane Williamson’s side notch up a great score.
At one stage, as KKR chased 175 runs for the win, they looked to be on course for the win. And a comfortable one at that. But then Rashid Khan came into the attack and with three pivotal wickets, turned the course of the match.
For Kolkata Knight Riders, Chris Lynn hit 48 but he found no support from the middle order.Chasing a stiff target of 175, Kolkata got off to the perfect start, with opener Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn hitting boundaries for fun. The duo took the attack to SRH pacers and simply took apart the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and debutant Khaleel Ahmed early on.
Siddarth Kaul was introduced in the fourth over of the innings and he broke the 40-run opening partnership by getting rid of the danger-man Narine (26). That brought Nitsh Rana to the crease and he along with Lynn started to build a good partnership for the second wicket.
Things were going well for KKR as Lynn and Rana played positive cricket and put on a 47-run partnership off just 31 deliveries for the second wicket. However, a suicidal piece of running cost Rana his wicket and things started to go downhill from there on for the home side.
Robin Uthappa — in trying to hit an outrageous reverse sweep — saw his leg stump uprooted off the bowling of Rashid Khan. Dinesh Karthik soon followed suit as he was castled by Shakib Al Hasan for just 8.
Rashid then struck again as he wrapped Lynn on his pads and the Australian had to head back into the hut for 48. Andre Russell became Rashid’s third scalp of the day when he was caught out in the slip by Shikhar Dhawan for 3.Shubman Gill and Piyush Chawla stitched together a 27-run partnership to get KKR closer to the target but Kaul in the penultimate over of the innings removed Chawla to peg back the home side even further.
Gill then hit a huge six on the last ball of the 19th over and that meant KKR needed 19 runs from the last over. Shivam Mavi hit a boundary on the first ball from Carlos Brathwaite and the home support was still hopeful of a positive result at this point in time. However, Mavi and Gill fell on successive deliveries, in identical fashion to Brathwaite and in the end, KKR fell short by 13 runs.
Earlier,Rashid Khan played a stunning 34 not out off 10 balls as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) reached 174/7 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the penultimate match played at the Eden Gardens on Friday.
Rashid has produced a sensational spell of batting here. He blasts two sixes and two fours in the last over bowled by Prasidh Krishna as he concedes 24 runs in the final over. This onslaught has helped Sunrisers Hyderabad reach 174/7 in 20 overs.SRH smashed 50 runs off the final three overs and it was not Hooda or Pathan or Brathwaite doing the damage, it was the Afghanistan magician – Rashid Khan showing his prowess with the bat. His 10-ball 34 has lifted the Hyderabad camp.
Dhawan started in a positive manner and allowed his opening partner Saha to take time, but just when he was shifting gears Kuldeep struck twice in one over and sent SRH’s batting pillars packing – Dhawan and Williamson.Saha got his flow back and Shakib also contributed with a 20-odd, but wickets at key intervals put the brakes on the scoring.
Rashid brings up the team 150 in style. He clobbers a six inside out to sweeper cover where Piyush Chawla makes a mess of the catch. On the last ball, he reaches out and creams another six to the deep cover fence.
KKR continue to take wickets at regular intervals. Carlos Brathwaite slams a six off Prasidh Krishna and squeezes a yorker to third man. Nitish Rana dives, stops the ball and then fires a throw to DK to catch Brathwaite short of the crease.
The pressure has been built and Deepak Hooda falls. He employs the reverse sweep and holes out to short third man. Yusuf Pathan shoulders arms to the last ball and Sunil Narine ends with figures of 4-0-24-1.Disaster for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Deepak Hooda drills a full ball at the non-striker’s end and Kuldeep Yadav gets a hand to it on his followthrough, Shakib is out of the crease and he has to depart for 28.
Kuldeep Yadav bowls a very good over as Deepak Hooda and Shakib Al Hasan struggle to find the boundary. Kolkata Knight Riders are doing a great job with the ball. The score is a great recovery for Kane Williamson’s side, who were dented at regular intervals by Kuldeep Yadav and Sunil Narine.
After won the match,
SRH captain Kane Williamson Kane Williamson said, ” Was a great fighting effort, game ebbed and flowed. Game could’ve gone either way, fell our way in crunch moments. Credit to the way the boys finished off. Was slipping away at the start, but we pulled it back nicely to get wickets.”
“Rashid was brilliant, but he’s got another game day after. We’ll keep him wrapped up. Exciting, must-win game, great to go through to the final, important to move on. As a team we fight till the last ball, showed that today. Someone like Rashid is the perfect example of that,” he said.
“Outstanding talent, but a team effort. Lot of the guys chipped in, great team fighting effort which is the attitude we want to see. I the thing we didn’t change was our balance, Saha was injured but he came back, was nice to have his experience. Every one of the guys have played a huge part, whether on or off the field,” Williamson added.
Player of he Match Rashid Khan said, ” He dedicates the award to those who lost their lives in a blast during a cricket game in his hometown few days ago. Is there something he can’t do? Bat, ball, field. He’s a legend already in these parts.”
“It was much-needed for me, wanted to give my 100 percent in all departments. Focus was to just believe in my skills. I was happy with the batting, it was needed in the end.I started my career as a batsman, I believe in my skills and wanted to finish off well. I just tried to pick the lengths, the focus was to play straight.
That was the plan from the senior players,” he said.” Fielding is one department where you can’t make excuses, compared to last year, I’ve worked really hard in my fielding. If I can’t contribute with bat or ball, I’m always looking forward to contribute on the field. Modern cricket demands that. I’m working hard on that,” Rashid added.
Shakib Al Hasan said, “Third time i’ll be playing in an IPL final. Thanks to the franchise for playing me in all games. Some games we didn’t do our best, but a good tournament overall for Sunrisers. We always knew you can lose in the last two-three overs in T20s, momentum changes.”
“We had to hold our nerves, but we used our experience from the other day. Carlos will be a happy man, the way we lost that day, he thought it was because of him. The way he came back today was terrific. Chennai is a great side, it’ll be a great final. In the middle overs where Rashid and I bowled, we squeezed the game. That was the turning point,” he added.
KKR captain said, ” It’s hard to digest, we played a good tournament. To finish on the losing side doesn’t feel good. We had the game at the 10-over mark, couple of bad shots cost us. Me, Robin had to bat through, Lynn was good. Me not batting through was a mistake on my part.”
Owner of the KKR Shah Rukh Khan after the match tweeted, “Well was not to be. Will have to cancel my flight but KKR well done. U did yourself proud. All of u so so well done. Love you & yes I am smiling. Thks for the entertainment & so many moments of glory. V r an awesome team!”
