Lucknow, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, along with several state ministers and officials, on Thursday participated in the fourth International Yoga Day celebrations at Raj Bhawan here.
Around 1,000 yoga enthusiasts thronged the Raj Bhawan in the early morning and later performed ‘asanas’.
Addressing the gathering before the commencement of the yoga routines, Mr Singh, who is also the Lok Sabha MP from Lucknow, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enhancing yoga’s reputation globally.
“While yoga has been there for ages, it got its rightful place on the global platform due to the efforts of our Prime Minister, and now people take it seriously and have reaped its health benefits,” he added.
Mr Singh also cleared doubts that yoga was meant only for Hindus and pointed had that been the case, it would not have been supported by 177 countries across the world, which included the world body UN and 46 Islamic nations.
Mr Adityanath said that in order to remain disease free, the practice of yoga was very fruitful.
While all the participants were wearing white T-shirts on the occasion, Mr Adityanath had donned a saffron shirt.
Several state ministers, bureaucrats and police officers were present at the event along with children and women in large numbers.
Yoga asanas were also performed at 10 city parks throughout the state capital.State ministers, MPs and legislators also participated in the events in all the 75 districts of the state.
Union Power Minister Piyush Goel, along with BJP MLA Pankaj Singh, led the event in Noida, while UP BJP president Mahendra Nath Pandey in Varanasi and State Law Minister Brajesh Pathak in Bareilly.
Secretary Ayush, Mukesh Mehsram told reporters here on Thursday that in all 150 participants from the Patanjali Yogpeeth, 200 from the Uttar Pradesh Naturopathy and Yoga Teachers Association, Tatwasami Yoga Institutes`s 54 and 73 from the Brahmakumari`s were participating in the event at the Raj Bhawan.
In December 2014, following a request from Mr Modi, the UN General Assembly had declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, to be celebrated each year.
