‘’I called you today to tell you that I will be contesting assembly elections and will be party’s chief ministerial candidate,’’ Thackeray’s announcement is seen as an attempt to boost the sagging morale of the MNS workers after the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.
‘’Yes I will contest the assembly elections of Maharashtra which are due in November and if given the mandate by the people, will lead the state, he said during a rally yesterday.
He will become the first person from the Thackeray clan to contest an election. His uncle Bal Thackeray and estranged cousin Uddhav Thackeray have never contested an election.
So far, Shiv Sena chief late Bal Thackeray and his son Uddhav preferred to refrain from direct elections.
