Rahul Gandhi

It is almost certain that Mr Rahul Gandhi will take over as party President from his mother Mrs Sonia Gandhi. She is longest serving party president for four term now stepping aside on health ground. Some time back she was operated upon in the America.

In the ongoing general elections to Himachal and Gujarat Vidhan Sabha she kept away from campaigning not to exert more. The party vice president Mr Rahul Gandhi caring out whirlwind election campaigns in both the states. The election results of these two states will cast reflections on Mr Rahul Gandhi and Mr Narendra Modi.

The Congress Working Committee in its meeting on November 20 at Delhi decided to hold election for post to party presidents. The Central Election Authority fixed up the time schedule-nomination between December 1 to 4, withdrawal on December 11 and polling if necessary on December 16. It appears that Mr Gandhi will be the only person to file nomination and on December 11 he will be declared elected unopposed.

Mr Rahul Gandhi will give youth face to the organization and Herculean task before him to restore the party in states and India as whole as party in power. In 1977 after the Emergency the party was routed in states and at Centre. It was due to towering personality of Mr Jaya Prakash Narayan and his charisma.

After his demise Mrs Indira Gandhi within three years in 1980 bounced back to power at the Centre and states with increased public mandate in mid-term general elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

It was her ledership and charisma to regain everything so soon. Congress faced ackward situation when in 1996 at could not secure majority in Lok Sabha but no other party also could not get majority and in between a shaky coalition era started and Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee twice, Mr H.D. Deve Gowda and Mr I.K. Gujaral formed coalition governments that collapsed within short time like house of cards.

Ultimately for the Bharatiya Janata Party forming N.D.A. able to form government in 1999 that lasted for full five year term till 2004. But the Congress under the leadership of Party President Mrs Sonia Gandhi defeated the BJP-led N.D.A and regained power in 2004 and Congress led U.P.A. Government of Prime Minister Mr Manmohan Singh continued for two terms for 10 years in power till 2014.

Now the task before Mr Rahul Gndhi is to infuse confidence in the Congress and will to power to recapture the power as it did in 1980 and 2004. It is a very happy trend for the system of parliamentary democracy two party system between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party is emerging.

Still organizationally the Congress is biggest political party of the nation will its presence in every nook and corner of the country. It has record of bouncing back to power and Rahul Gandhi is ray of hope.
