Pulses Production

The Central Agriculture Ministry has assessed that in this Rabi season record sowing of gram and all the pulses have been carried out throughout the country. In March-April harvesting time bumper crops of wheat, gram and pulses are expected.

Long back the country was producing enough wheat, gram and pulses. But the country was facing acute shortage of edible oil, our oil seeds production were not enough to meet the requirement of the country.

Our edible oil shortage was 60 per cent of requirement and India has no other option but to import it. As a permanent solution the Government introduced ‘Soyabean’ into Indian agriculture.

It is not an Indian crop and brought in from America. Indian farmers were ignorant about. The Central and State Agriculture Departments pushed it into our agro system and now it is fully absorbed into Indian agriculture. It is both oil seed as well as grain. Its flour is used in preparing many food items besides having edible oil also.

Number of soya oil mills and soya product industries are set up. Soyabean is in great demand. It resulted that farmers giving up the pulses cultivation switched over to soya crop. Consequently in the country there is shortage of pulses upto 40 per cent of our requirement and we are importing it.

It also reduced the intake of pulses in the daily food plate. Otherwise Roti-Rice and pulses were essential in food in every household. The pulses are main source of protein and reduced intake of it affected general health of the country.

The Government alarmed by this trends enhanced the minimum support price of the pulses and farmers on getting higher prices of pulses reverted back to cultivation of pulses.

The gram is both grain and pulse and this year its sowing carried out in record 78,260 lakh acres of land which is 8 per cent above the last year area. In other pulses there are record sowing in 118 acres of land.

This year India which is importing pulses so far will export it. The Government must workout some equitable formula on prices of domestic produce and imported stocks. Difference in prices creates uncertainty in market.
