Lucknow, On the last day of filing of nominations, the SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate Ms Poonam Sinha, wife of Congress candidate for Patna Saheb Lok Sabha seat in Bihar Shatrughan Sinha and Congress candidate Pramod Krishnan filed their nomination papers from Lucknow seat to challenge union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Ms Poonam Sinha filed her nomination papers at the collectorate without much pomp and show in presence of local SP leaders, including Ravi Das Mehrotra and Abhishek Mishra. However, shotgun or Shatrughan Sinha was not present along with his wife when she handed over her papers to district Returning Officer Kaushal Raj Sharma.
Meanwhile, Congress candidate Pramod Krishnan, also filed his nomination papers by holding a padyatra for around 800 meters along with Congress leaders and supporters.
Today is the last day for filing of the nominations for Lucknow parliamentary seat which goes to polls on May 6. The papers would be scrutinised on Saturday while candidates can withdraw their nominations till April 22.
Poonam Sinha had joined the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday , though her husband is a Congress candidate from Patna Saheb Lok Sabha seat in Bihar ,which goes to polls in the last phase.
Mr Singh, who is the sitting MP, had already filed his nomination papers on April 16. Ms Sinha, 69, has been an actress and afashion model. She acted in Hindi cinema under the screen name Komal in her early career. She was crowned Miss Young India in 1968. She worked in minor roles in Hindi movies, and has also produced two films. Her latest film was Jodha Akbar.
She was cast with Shatrughan Sinha in the movie Sabak released in1973 and the two later got married in 1980. After her marriage, Poonam left her acting career to raise their children.
After a long gap of thirty years, she starred in the film Jodhaa Akbar in 2008 playing the role of Mallika Hamida Banu Begum – mother of Emperor Akbar, enacted by Hrithik Roshan, directed by noted film director Ashutosh Gowariker. She is a mother of three and her daughter Sonakshi Sinha and a known Bollywood actor.
Meanwhile, on the other hand the Congress candidate Pramod Krishnan is a veteran seer-turned-politician. He had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Sambhal seat in UP but was pushed on the fifth spot after gaining just over 14,000 votes. He is a former MP and legislator from UP.
