PM welcomes Sunni Waqf Board statement ‘disowning’ Sibal

In quite interesting turn of events senior counsel and prominent Congress leader Kapil Sibal was left embarrassed on Wednesday when UP Sunni Waqf Board disowned his ‘plea’ in the Supreme Court to defer the hearing on vexed Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute till 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made optimum use of the episode after Haji Mehboob of the Sunni Waqf Board told journalists: “Yes, Kapil Sibal is our lawyer but he is also related to a political party. His statement in the Supreme Court on Tuesday was wrong…..We want a solution to the issue at the earliest”.

Addressing an election rally at Dahod, Mr Modi while complimenting Sunni Waqf Board for its statement, also took potshot at Congress suggesting that the principal opposition party has been “trying to create hurdles” for a solution to the long pending dispute.

“You tell me what 2019 general elections have to do with Ram temple at Ayodhya. I congratulate Sunni Waqf Board, I am grateful to them. Today Sunni Waqf Board has said what Kapil Sibal told the court on Tuesday on their behalf was wrong,” Prime Minister said.

Incidentally the high profile row over Congress party’s stand on Ram Temple issue came to light on Wednesday, the 25th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.

Arguing that the title case related to the Ayodhya land dispute may have serious ramifications, Kapil Sibal who had appeared for the UP Sunni Central Waqf Board on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to defer the matter for hearing after the parliamentary elections in 2019.

BJP chief Amit Shah dubbed it as an ‘double standard’ of the Congress party and asked party Vice President Rahul Gandhi to clarify his stand. “Rahulji is visiting temples in Gujarat but on the other hand Kapil Sibal is being used to delay Ram Janmbhoomi case.

Rahul ji should tell us what his view on this,” Mr Shah has asked. Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surejewala said, “Congress’ stand has always been clear, that the Ayodhya matter will be heard and decided by the Supreme Court. BJP chief Amit Shah is only trying to garner votes in the name of Lord Rama.”
