Participating in a public consultation with representatives from various minority communities, including Muslims, as part of the Party exercise to include demands and aspirations of sections of people in its manifesto for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Mr Gandhi recalled the fear of a young boy he met at a relief camp at Shamli near Muzaffarnagar. ‘’No person of any community or caste should ever be scared in India. This is a secular country,’’ Mr Gandhi said at the consultation held with several activists, youth and professionals and experts working on minorities issues.
Senior leaders of the Congress party Salman Khurshid, K Rahman Khan, Oscar Fernandes, Jairam Ramesh, Pradeep Jain Aditya, Khurshid Saiyed and Haroon Yusuf were present at the consultation.
Talking to reporters about the deliberations, senior Congress leader and External affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said, ‘’During the consultation, Mr Gandhi stressed the need to “fight the politics that thrives on creating fear”.’’
‘’The Congress vice-president said the Congress party believes in ‘Shanti Ke Saath Kranti’ (peace and transformation),’’ Mr Khurshid said.
